SQM 2019 – Second Bulletin
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to update you on the preparation of the upcoming 18th International Conference on Strangeness in Quark Matter (SQM 2019) that will be held in Bari, Italy from 10 to 15 June 2019. The conference is organized by the INFN in collaboration with the University and the Polytechnic University of Bari. The scientific programme, consisting of invited and contributed talks and poster presentations, is currently being finalized.
The conference website is online at https://sqm2019.cloud.ba.infn.it/
The site is continuously updated.
Registration and Payment
Registration is currently open and will continue until 1 June 2019. The conference fee is 390 € for early registrations (for participants who register and pay within 1 April 2019) and 450 € for late registrations. The full fee for accompanying persons is 150 € and includes coffee breaks, lunches and social events. Reduced fee options for accompanying persons joining excursion and/or social dinner only are also available.
Payments are now possible and can be made by bank transfer or credit card as detailed on the conference website. The status of the registration in INDICO will be changed to “complete” by our administrative staff after your payment is received. Regular invoices will be distributed at the registration desk upon arrival in Bari. The registration closes on 1 June 2019. On-site registration and payment will not be possible.
Abstract submission
Abstract submission is currently open and will continue until 24 February 2019: please note that the deadline has been extended to give everyone a final chance to submit a proposal for a talk or a poster contribution. Notifications about selected contributions will be delivered by 15 March 2019.
Accommodation
Participants are kindly requested to directly book their rooms in Bari. Early booking is highly recommended, since Bari is a very requested tourist destination, especially during the high season. A limited number of rooms have been reserved with special pricing for SQM 2019 attendees at the conference venue (Hotel Mercure Villa Romanazzi Carducci). Additional contingents of rooms and apartments have been pre-booked also in other hotels and B&B in the city centre: further details can be found on the conference website. All the negotiated options will expire on 31 March 2019.
Student support
Thanks to the conference sponsors, funds have been set aside to facilitate the attendance of young researchers to SQM 2019. Students and participants who have received their PhDs within the past three years are encouraged to ask for support according to the guidelines reported on the website. The deadline for student support application has been extended to 24 February 2019. Support acceptance will be notified by 15 March 2019.
Social Events
The programme foresees a half-day excursion (on Wednesday 12 June) and a social dinner (on Thursday 13 June). Participants are required to choose between two options for the excursion: 1) a visit to Matera, the European Capital of Culture in 2019 and 2) a visit to the medieval castle “Castel del Monte” followed by a visit to the seaside city of Trani with its Romanic Cathedral.
The social dinner will take place in the Villa Maria restaurant (Castellana Grotte), a magnificent villa dated back to the beginning of the last century, immersed in a park populated by pines and centuries-old cedars. Villa Maria is 15 minutes far by car from the small town of Alberobello, UNESCO World Heritage site since 1996, where we plan to have a short visit before the social dinner. Further information can be found on the conference website.
Visa information
The SQM 2019 conference adheres to the principle of the free circulation of scientists as articulated by the International of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP) policy. We encourage all international participants to familiarize themselves as soon as possible with the visa requirements for travel to Italy that can be found at http://vistoperitalia.esteri.it/home/en, since the visa issuing process can take several months. Letters of invitation for visa purposes will be sent to registered conference participants upon request (email to sqm2019@ba.infn.it).
